Borrow, compare, then choose

The book basket

A useful reading setup can be very small. Start with a subject you care about, a comfortable place and a way to keep your notes.

Spend on the problem you actually have

If a book is hard to hold open, a book rest may help. If the words are unfamiliar, a brighter lamp will not explain them. Separate comfort, access and instruction before choosing equipment.

These are selection checklists, not hands-on product reviews. We do not invent testing results or recommend a particular seller before checking its listing. Ask a library about borrowing books and audio before paying for a subscription.

Books and listening

Read a sample in your preferred format. Check the print size, line spacing, subject matter and chapter length. For audio, listen to the narrator sample and try the speed controls. A familiar topic can make a challenging book worth the extra effort; an easier book need not be a children's book.

Browse Books-A-Million

Compare editions and formats at Books-A-Million after checking your library. Read a sample and confirm the print size and reading level before ordering.

A small practice kit

A pencil, a notebook and one well-chosen passage are enough for many sessions. Choose paper that gives you space to revise a sentence or show a calculation. Before buying a workbook, check whether the answers explain the steps and whether the pages assume skills you have not yet studied.

Wishacc bamboo book stand, 13.2 by 9.2 inches

Wishacc bamboo book stand, 13.2 by 9.2 inches

Five angle settings and page clips can hold a book open on a table. Check the size against your book first: the clips can be awkward with thick volumes, and the lowest angle may not suit every reader.

Explore Learning How to Learn on Coursera

Optional course: Learning How to Learn covers memory, study habits and procrastination. Compare its format with the study plan you have made, and check the provider for current access options and pricing. A course purchase is not needed to use this guide.

Return policies are part of the comparison

Book stands need to fit the books you read. Headphones need to feel comfortable for the time you use them. A lamp needs to illuminate the page without shining into your eyes. Keep packaging until you have checked the fit and read the seller's return terms before ordering.

Shopping links and our choices

When shopping links are available, they are labelled and may earn a commission. Product selection should still begin with a need, not a discount. Merchant offers appear only when their site approval and geography match. See the shopping note for how links work.

Next: choose an adult-interest book or compare a reading light.
