At the tutor table

A useful tutoring session begins with the learner's purpose. Before choosing a worksheet, ask what the person wants to read, write or calculate more comfortably. A shopping list, job notice or short book passage can give a session a clear direction.

This page is a new resource on an older tutor-information address. It is not a training certificate, an enrollment desk or a statement of a former organization's policy.

Before you meet

Agree on a place and time, a way to cancel and a rough session length. Choose a setting where the learner can ask questions without an audience. Bring a small amount of material rather than a large stack of exercises. Make copies only when you have permission to use the text.

If you work through an organization, use its training, safeguarding, confidentiality and recordkeeping procedures. Ask its coordinator what information you should collect and how to store it. Do not put learner details into personal cloud tools simply because they are convenient.

A manageable session shape

Begin by asking what has changed since the last meeting. Review one familiar item to establish a starting point. Introduce one small new task, demonstrate your thinking, then invite the learner to try it with support. Finish by naming what to return to and agreeing on a realistic next step.

This is a suggested structure, not a universal timetable. Someone arriving after a long shift may need a shorter session. Someone preparing for a specific appointment may need to spend the whole meeting on that task.

Listen for the kind of help needed

When a sentence is difficult, avoid assuming the cause. Ask the learner what they think the passage says and which word or instruction caused trouble. Reading involves several connected skills. The LINCS reading resources describe components that can guide an educator's planning; they do not justify making a diagnosis from one error.

Give thinking time. A pause is not an invitation to take over immediately. If a learner asks for the word, offer it clearly, then return to the meaning of the sentence. The aim is useful practice and understanding, not a performance for the tutor.

Keep the work adult

Choose material with adult interests and useful contexts. Short sentences do not require childish themes. Ask which topics the learner would prefer to avoid. Do not use a personal bill, medical letter or immigration document as a casual group exercise.

If an important real document is involved, help the learner locate the responsible source for clarification rather than inventing an interpretation. A tutor can support reading without becoming a legal, medical or benefits adviser.

Record the next step

End with a short note the learner can use: the text practiced, a word or strategy to revisit, and the next agreed meeting. If formal records are required, keep them under the program's rules. Avoid writing labels that overstate what a single session showed.
